Ramblings from the Workshop
Not much to say, we enjoy woodturning, Les has been woodturning for a good few years now and I (Colin) for the past 4years, its now at the stage where we are discussing (arguing) which is the best way to approach the piece or its design. It fascinates us both, the different challenges each and every piece of wood throws your way, In the next few pages I will post pictures of some off our work. Recycling wood into a useful and lovely item, which can be very tactile can fill you with immense satisfaction, and it gives pleasure to others.
We turn, carve, chop and make heaps of shavings in a very small workshop, which is full of inspiration some times, it has been known to have a plan an idea a thought as how the piece will look before we start then by the time it is finished it looks completely different but hopefully compliments the size and grain of the timber. Sometimes it is like the wood wants you to go in that direction as though it is boss and why not as some pieces are away older than we are.
Whats New in the Workshop
All has been quite in the workshop lately apart from a few small items for family and friends and family weddings etc, I will upload photos soon, also the summer weather has been keeping us out of the shop, but there is always winter evenings to be at the lathe with the pot belly stove warmed up it is cosier than in the house, so with the lathe switched on and the stove fired up the weather can do what it likes out side, apart from when you have to make the mad dash back to the house, then please stop raining.
Well we have invested in a Kel McNaughton Bowl Saver and all I can say is we are having fun and so called technical discussions on how to use it, we have tried but to no success yet, so we have now purchased a DVD(by Reed Gray) on how it operates so here we go on our next challange. I will let you know when we have been successful and of course we will post pictures.
We have also been trying the drying process of "soap in your bowl" (google it ) for green wood, and you will see articles on it, we are having good success with it see pics of the red oak bowl in the gallery.
